Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR
Used by Ducati as original equipment on it's Desert Sled. The Pirelli Rally STR is great going from upright to right over. There is a bit of block movement but not a massive amount, a very good tyre if you like the look of knobblies but also enjoy riding hard on the tarmac.

The Two Tyres 1-minute guide to the Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR
What is it: A rally tyre for the road! The STR is the Scorpion Rally but made in sizes to fit road bikes that tend to run wider tyres (STR stands for Street). It’s a knobbly, go anywhere tyre but the clever tread pattern means the tread blocks aren’t angular, so the road noise and comfort is minimised when compared to an all-out big-block tread pattern.
We spent a day riding a BMW R1250GS on these tyres. They look the business, offer plenty of grip and have decent off-road capability. They wouldn’t be our first choice for pure road riders but if you mix road and trail, they’re ideal.
What tyre it replaces: The Rally STR replaces the MT90 AT.
Who is it aimed at:If you want a tyre that can cope with the off-road side of things but also has great road manners the STR is a great option. The tread blocks have a rounded profile which means the STR corners like a road tyre, so it gives you that chunky off-road look but without the wandering you can get from a off-road tyre.
Typically seen on: A wide range of bikes, the STR is OEM fitment for the Ducati Desert Sled and the Yamaha Tenere 700. The STR is mainly fitted by two types of rider. Adventure bike riders who want to do a bit of light off-road or who like the rugged look. And then custom bike riders who want a chunky, knobbly-looking tyre to give the bike a great stance.
Rally STR highlights: Mud & Snow rated. Tread block pattern without the square blocks, meaning it rides exceptionally well on the road.
Rally STR sizes: From 15″ rears to 21″ fronts and almost everything in between.
A more extreme option: The Pirelli Scorpion Rally (without the STR)
A more road-focused option: The Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 is a better road tyre, still capable of light trail action but not as good off-road as the STR.
The competition: The Scorpion Rally STR is closely matched by the Metzeler Karoo Street, Continental TKC70 and TKC70 Rocks Rear, the Avon Trekrider and the Dunlop Trailmax Meridian.
Pirelli says:
THE NEW KNOBBLY ENDURO ON/OFF TYRE FOR ADVENTURE WITHOUT LIMITS.
- Technological innovations provide traction on dirt, stability at high speeds, on-road handling agility and grip in all riding conditions.
- A new compound, with a high content of silica, offers increased grip on both dry and wet surfaces, stability and a superior resistance to abrasion.
- Increased width and length of the tyre’s contour makes a larger contact patch for better stability.
- Blocks are longer and wider, and the longitudinal distance between each line of knobs has been reduced to increase the contact patch, without compromising off-road traction.
- Heat, generated by high speed, is distributed across a wider surface to prevent knob tearing.
- All sizes tubeless type.
- M + S RATED, a legal requirement in some countries for use during winter months.
- 90/90 V21 ‘A’ fitment is now homologated for all 21″ adventure bikes.
- New for 2024 a 120/90-17 for the extremely popular Royal Enfield Himalayan.
M+S stands for Mud and Snow, rather than M&S who are a purveyor of fine foods. You can check out our winter motorcycle tyre guide here which lists our recommended motorcycle tyres for cold weather conditions
Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR Review
“Throughout Europe we’ve ridden plenty of tarmac, mostly in great condition. We left in August but heading north the temperature quickly cooled of and rain started to fall. The tires have great grip in corners at all speeds. Even during the harshest rainstorm we’ve ever been in, the bikes never slipped. A great tyre to rely on in all conditions.” – Adventurism.tv
