The Two Tyres 1-minute guide to the Bridgestone BT-023
What is it: A Sports Touring tyre that offers excellent all-weather grip and longevity. Bridgestone’s no-nonsense budget-priced sports-touring tyre has been in its range for a decade. While the rubber used has been revised, the BT-023 has always been a tyre that’s blended all weather performance with value for money.
What tyre it replaces: Introduced in 2010, the BT023 replaced the BT-021.
Who is it aimed at: The all weather no nonsense rider who wants a real world reliable tyre to commute on and to tour.
Typically seen on: Popular with riders who use their bike as a tool to help them get the job done. You’re likely to see a BT-023 on a Honda CBR6500R, a KTM RC390, a Honda NC750S, Yamaha FZ6 or an older sports touring bike like a Honda Blackbird.
Bridgestone BT-023 highlights: Any tyre that’s remained in a manufacturer’s range for a decade is a good tyre. The 023 is popular as it’s a versatile real-world tyre that offers great wet-weather performance, neutral and stable handling and good wet-weather grip.
Bridgestone BT-023 sizes: The Battlax BT23 comes in a wide variety of sizes to cater for most road-going motorcycles form the past twenty years.
Also worth a look: The Bridgestone BT-023 is a value for money road tyre, that’s closely matched to the Pirelli Angel ST, the Michelin Road 2 and Metzeler Z6.
The premium option: If you want to spend a bit more to get the very latest tyre tech then check out the Bridgestone T32 which is Bridgestone’s latest generation all year, all conditions tyre.
Bridgestone says:
- High levels of wet grip, accompanied by low noise, light handling and stable braking.
- Low wear rates for long distance mileage, and 3 compound technology for increased grip when cornering.
- Different carcass construction on the BT-023 GT for larger touring bikes.
Bridgestone says:
Our new Battlax BT-023 doesn’t just go further to deliver outstanding sports-touring performance… it goes mile upon comfortable mile further… In short, the BT-023 is designed to deliver outstanding mileage and a whole lot more. Things like greatly improved wet-grip, low-noise, light-handling, sharp-braking and superb shock-absorption to make smooth work of the toughest trip. Features that make it easy to see why the BT-023 is destined to become the ‘must have’ tyre for today’s touring bikes… and selected sports bikes too
Or, to put it simply, if you ride a bike like a Blade or a GSXR1000 and you want outstanding grip, remarkable handling and rock-solid, high-speed stability… you got it!Such performance is hardly surprising when you look at the BT-023’s heritage… following in the tracks of the legendary BT-020/021 and with all the technological advances you’d expect from the world’s leading tyre manufacturer.
Advances like Mono-Spiral Belt, 3LC and Silica Rich Ex construction and, probably the most significant advance of all, RC Polymer. Without getting too technical*, this is a rubber designed to give a better silica distribution to improve tread flexibility for enhanced wet and low-temperature performance and grip.
The technology also gives improved rolling resistance to reduce fuel consumption and tyre noise. Trust Bridgestone to go further to deliver a sports-touring tyre that leaves the competition miles behind.
Press Reviews
“On the brief dry sections of our ride the 023 seemed to get up to working temperature rapidly and delivered good dry grip, certainly more than enough for most road riders if you are honest about your riding ability. Unless you get your knee down at every corner you probably don’t need any more grip. Would it survive a trackday? I would say slow/medium group riders would be ok, but I reckon fast group riders should opt for a sportier choice. But that’s not really the point in the 023, it’s predominantly a road tyre and delivers good grip and excellent claimed wear rates.” – Visordown

“Medium to hard braking was enough, with only light pulses of the ABS’s intervention felt, but knock this up a level to full blown panic braking and the ABS doesn’t trust the grip levels achievable by the dependable front Bridgestone BT-023. At least the traction control had more faith in the Japanese rubber, not intervening once despite abusive attempts to engage it.” – MotorCycleMonthly
Customer Reviews
“Using on a Kawasaki ZZR1200, Isle of Man (not the best roads- many negative camber bends), climate is cool and rarely above 20degrees (real feel). Bike originally fitted with BT020 which wore rather quickly, replaced with BT021 (better wear) and now have a few thousand miles wear on BT023, front and rear wear is significantly better than both predecessors (BT020 and BT021).
I have had my tyres tampered with and have lost air out of both, did not notice immediately(both almost flat) but yes could ride these at high speed almost flat (in cool climate) without any noticeable damage. I recall a cold day in winter (pressures good (around 40/ 41 – both) bike hit a gentle double wheel slide mid bend and both tyres caught the bike at the same time meaning no crash, have had a double wheel slide on BT016 also in wet on lean and again was able to pick it up.
Never had the BT023 step out of line, I don’t ride on the edge, do ride straight line fast but do ride with cold conditions.. Bridgestones have never let me down- wear is better that Conti Road attacks (seem softer). this never has a problem throwing the torque down, they stop well, neutral cornering for predicatble riding.. have considered pilot road 3 as alternative but prefer considering BT023 GT next (extra centre belt on rear) to see how they perform before moving brands. safe riding!”
Bridgestone BT023 versus the rivals
bt023 vs t30
Bridgestone’s T30 was the replacement of the BT023. A really good tyre for Touring and commuting, it was replaced by the updated T30 evo.
bt023 vs t31
Bridgestone’s T30 was the replacement of the BT023. A really good tyre for Touring and commuting, it was repalced by the updated T30 evo.
bt023 vs pilot road 4
Guess what tyre the Pilot Road 4 replaced? Easy eh. The Road 4 was claimed to have 20% more mileage than the Road 3, this was certainly true for the front tyre but it didn’t quite have the performance in the wet as the Road 3 front. Also available in GT spec fitments for the over weight bikes out there.
bt023 vs pilot road 3
The Pilot Road 3 was the replacement for the Road 2, improving all aspects ever so slightly over the Road 2. The stand out feature is its front tyre pattern which incorporated the then new XST sipe which chucks out water like no other road tyre before it. Was replaced by the Road 4 which never quite got the following and praise this one did.
bt023 vs pilot road 2
A game changer! The Pilot Road 2 replaced the Road. When this was released back in 2007 it’s 2CT dual compound blew the competion away with it’s unbeleivable wet weather performance and also it’s outstanding ability on dry tarmac. The fact it’s still available after so long proves what a quality tyre this one is.

bt023 vs bt023gt
The BT023GT is Bridgestone’s budget Sports Touring tyre for the ‘larger and heavier’ bikes out there, it was introduced as the replacement for the incredibly popular BT021GT. A very good choice if you need a GT spec fitment at a great price.
bt023 vs conti motion
Continental’s Conti Motion is a budget radial tyre. A very good commuter and touring tyre with sizes suitable for a wide range of bikes.
bt023 vs t30 evo
With it’s 3 layer compound technology the T30 evo improved the already great weather performance of the T30 whilst also increasing it’s mileage, another positive is the tyres turn in was also improved.
bt 023 vs road 5
Dropping the word Pilot from the name but the Road 5 is the evolution of Michelin’s most popular road tyre. Its distinctive Sipes technology helps make this a brilliant tyre in the wet while its fast warm up and edge grip are what makes it a firm favourite. Available in GT spec for heavy tourers and Trail for Adventure bike wheel sizes.
bt 023 vs angel gt
The GT is Pirelli’s evolution of the popular ST. A touring tyre with a sporty edge, thanks to its bi-compound design, with a soft shoulder for better edge grip and a harder central compound for increased mileage. ‘A’ fitment is a 2-ply stiffer carcass for heavier bikes.
